Two Paradigms, Two Problems

When we examine modern distributed systems, we encounter two fundamental challenges that have shaped decades of infrastructure development. The first challenge is how to process information reliably across components, which has given us stream processing frameworks, actor systems, and message brokers. The second is how to understand what our systems are doing, which has produced the observability movement with its metrics, traces, and logs. These challenges seem distinct, and our industry has developed separate solution categories for each: data processing systems like Apache Kafka, Flink, and Akka for the first challenge, and observability frameworks like OpenTelemetry for the second.

Yet both categories share a common conceptual foundation that shapes their architecture in ways we rarely question. They treat computation as the transfer of information between components, where messages or events flow through topologies, are transformed by functions, and produce outputs. They assume that understanding system behavior requires extracting data from running systems and processing it elsewhere, in backends and dashboards that reconstruct meaning from collected measurements. They conceptualize coordination as spatial relationships between components rather than temporal relationships between events.

The Substrates framework and its Serventis observability extension challenge these foundational assumptions. Before exploring how, we must establish clearly what Substrates does and doesn’t attempt to solve. This is because the paradigm shift it represents can be easily misunderstood as claiming to replace all aspects of conventional architectures, when in fact it addresses a specific architectural layer.

Substrates focuses on real-time signal interpretation and deterministic local computation. It provides infrastructure for systems that need to understand their own operational signals as they occur, form assessments from those signals, and adapt behavior through closed-loop feedback—all at computational speeds with deterministic ordering guarantees. This is complementary to, not competitive with, systems that provide durable event storage, cross-datacenter replication, and guaranteed state reconstruction from persistent logs. A complete architecture often needs both: durable logs for the system of record and event sourcing layer, and real-time signal flows for the interpretation and adaptation layer.

This distinction matters because the trade-offs differ fundamentally. Durable storage systems optimize for reliability, auditability, and the ability to reconstruct state after arbitrary failures by accepting higher latencies and operational complexity. Real-time interpretation systems optimize for minimal latency, deterministic causality, and the ability to close feedback loops at computational speeds by accepting that signal flows are ephemeral and interpretation is live. Neither set of trade-offs is universally superior—they serve different architectural purposes, and production systems often require both layers working together.

With this boundary established, we can now explore how Substrates reconceptualizes the real-time interpretation layer specifically. Rather than building yet another stream processor or yet another telemetry collector, they reconceptualize what computation itself means and how systems can come to understand themselves. This essay explores how Substrates represents a paradigm shift in both categories, not by doing the same things better but by asking fundamentally different questions about what computation is and how meaning emerges in operational systems.

Part 1: Rethinking Data Processing – From Messages to Emissions

The Conventional Model: Information as Discrete Packets

To understand what makes Substrates different, we must first examine the conceptual model that unifies conventional data processing systems. Whether we’re looking at Akka, Apache Flink, or Apache Kafka, we find a shared metaphor: computation is the transfer and transformation of discrete information packets between components.

In Akka’s actor model, these packets are called messages. An actor sends a message to another actor’s address, and that message gets queued in a mailbox until the receiving actor processes it. The message is a reified piece of information, an object with identity and content, traveling through the system like a letter in a postal network. The conceptual model is fundamentally spatial and communicative. Actors are locations in an address space, messages are parcels moving between locations, and computation is the routing and handling of those parcels.

Apache Flink conceptualizes its data flow as streams of events or records passing through transformation operators. A source emits records into a dataflow graph, operators transform those records through functions like map, filter, and reduce, and sinks consume the results. The conceptual model is mathematical and functional. The system is a directed graph of pure functions, records are immutable values flowing through that graph, and computation is the application of transformations to produce outputs from inputs.

Apache Kafka takes yet another approach, modeling its data as logs of records organized into topics and partitions. Producers append records to logs, consumers read records from logs, and the broker manages the durable storage of those logs. The conceptual model is storage-centric and sequential. Topics are append-only databases, records are rows in those databases, and computation is the writing and reading of persistent sequences.

Despite their architectural differences, these systems share deep conceptual similarities. They all treat the fundamental unit of computation as a discrete, reified information packet that exists independently of any particular processing context. In Akka, you can inspect a message object, serialize it, and send it across a network. In Flink, you can examine a record, transform it through multiple operators, and partition it across parallel instances. In Kafka, you can read a record, rewind to earlier records, and replay sequences. The information has substance and persistence independent of the computation that processes it.

This conceptual model brings tremendous benefits. It makes systems easier to reason about because we can point to the messages, records, or events and say “this is what the system is processing.” It enables powerful patterns like replay and reprocessing because the information persists independently of the computation. It allows for clean separation of concerns where producers, processors, and consumers can be developed and deployed independently as long as they agree on message formats.

However, this model also introduces inherent constraints that limit what these systems can and can’t do. When information is reified as discrete packets, the system must manage the lifecycle of those packets, allocating memory, serializing content, routing between locations, and managing backpressure. When computation is defined as a transformation of packets, the system must maintain boundaries between transformation stages, managing handoffs and coordinating parallel processing. When topology is spatial, the system must handle dynamic reconfiguration carefully, updating routes and connections without losing packets in flight.

Substrates’ Alternative: Computation as Signal Flow

Substrates begins from a radically different conceptual foundation. Rather than modeling computation as the transfer of discrete information packets between components, it models computation as the flow of emissions through temporal orders. This shift from messages to emissions, from spatial topology to temporal ordering, from information transfer to signal flow, represents a fundamental reconceptualization of what computation means.

An emission in Substrates isn’t a reified object that exists independently of the computation processing it. It’s an event in time, a moment when a value flows through a pipe into the processing machinery of a circuit. Once emitted, the value doesn’t persist in queues or buffers waiting to be fetched. Instead, it triggers a deterministic cascade of processing within the circuit that owns the pipe. The emission is transient, ephemeral, existing only in the instant of its processing.

This might sound like a technical detail about memory management, but it reflects a profound conceptual difference. In conventional systems, the fundamental question is “where is this message and where should it go next?” In Substrates, the fundamental question is “when does this emission occur and what temporal order does it participate in?” The shift from where to when, from space to time, changes everything about how the system is conceived and used.

Consider the Circuit, Substrates’ core abstraction. A Circuit isn’t a worker thread or an execution context in the conventional sense. It’s a mechanism for establishing temporal ordering. Every Circuit owns exactly one processing thread, and all emissions within that Circuit are processed sequentially on that thread. This means that for any two emissions within a Circuit, there’s a definite before-and-after relationship. The first emission completes all its processing, including triggering any subscriber callbacks and flow transformations, before the second emission begins processing. The Circuit establishes causality not through explicit dependencies or message chains but through sequential processing on a single timeline.

This deterministic ordering enables patterns that are challenging or impossible in message-based systems. Consider implementing a feedback loop where processing of one event generates new events that must be processed in causal sequence with the original event. In Akka, you’d send messages back to the same actor, but those messages join the mailbox queue alongside other incoming messages, potentially interleaving in unpredictable ways. In Flink, you’d create an iterative dataflow, but the framework must manage convergence and backpressure across potentially distributed parallel instances. In Substrates, feedback loops are natural and deterministic. When processing an emission triggers new emissions on the same Circuit, those new emissions go to a high-priority transit queue drained before the next external emission is processed. The feedback completes atomically, maintaining causal integrity without explicit coordination.

The Circuit’s determinism also enables a different relationship to time itself. In message-based systems, time is external to the computation. Events have timestamps, processing has duration, but the system doesn’t inherently know what time it’s processing—it processes whatever messages arrive in whatever order they arrive. In Substrates, the Circuit establishes an internal notion of causal time through its processing sequence. This enables replay with perfect fidelity during live sessions for debugging, digital twin synchronization, where a remote system maintains an identical causal timeline during operation, and temporal debugging, where you can step through the exact sequence of emissions that led to a particular state within a running system.

It’s crucial to understand what this deterministic replay does and doesn’t provide. The Circuit’s temporal ordering enables replaying emission sequences within a live session for purposes like testing alternative decision paths in digital twins, debugging causal chains by stepping through emissions, or synchronizing multiple Circuits to maintain consistent views during operation. This is fundamentally different from the durable event sourcing that systems like Apache Kafka provide, where persistent replicated logs enable reconstructing state after arbitrary failures, crashes, or restarts by replaying events from permanent storage.

Substrates optimizes for real-time interpretation with ephemeral signals precisely because it focuses on the live operation layer rather than the durable storage layer. When a Circuit processes emissions, those signals trigger interpretations, assessments, and adaptations that produce new system states, but the signals themselves aren’t persisted. This trade-off enables the nanosecond latencies that make tight feedback loops practical, but it means that state reconstruction after process failures requires a different approach.

In practice, systems requiring both real-time interpretation and durable state reconstruction would use Substrates for the live processing layer while also emitting events to a durable log system for the persistence layer. A Substrates subscriber can forward significant events to Kafka topics, database transactions, or other durable stores, separating the concerns of live interpretation from persistent recording. The Circuit’s determinism ensures that this forwarding happens in a consistent, reproducible order, but the durability comes from the external storage system, not from Substrates itself. This architectural layering allows each system to optimize for its specific purpose: Substrates for real-time causal interpretation, Kafka for durable event sourcing.

Dynamic Topology: Discovery Versus Declaration

Another fundamental difference lies in how these systems conceptualize the relationships between components. Conventional data processing systems use declarative topology—you specify upfront what components exist and how they connect. In Akka, you create actors and obtain actor references that allow message sending. In Flink, you define a dataflow graph connecting sources, operators, and sinks. In Kafka, you create topics and configure producers and consumers to use those topics. The topology is a design-time artifact that must exist before processing begins.

Substrates inverts this relationship through what we might call nominative binding. Channels, the emission ports in Substrates, come into existence simply by being named. When you request a pipe from a conduit using a name, the system creates the channel if it doesn’t already exist. There’s no declaration phase, no provisioning step, no configuration ceremony. The topology emerges through the act of naming.

This might seem like a minor convenience feature, but it enables fundamentally different patterns. Consider implementing a system where new types of events can appear at runtime and need to be processed without restarting or reconfiguring the system. In conventional systems, this requires complex dynamic registration mechanisms, hot deployment infrastructure, or plugin architectures with careful version management. In Substrates, a subscriber can attach to a conduit and automatically receive callbacks whenever any channel appears on that conduit, even channels that don’t exist yet. The system discovers its own structure at runtime through observation rather than requiring that structure to be declared upfront.

This emergent topology model aligns with how neural networks actually develop structure through activity rather than through predetermined schemas. It enables adaptive systems that can wire themselves based on what they observe happening rather than following fixed plans. It supports exploratory computation where the system literally discovers what channels exist by observing emission patterns rather than consulting configuration files or service registries.

The Implications of Signal Flow

Stepping back to understand what these differences mean in practice, we can see that Substrates isn’t just “another way to process data.” It represents a different answer to the question of what computation fundamentally is. Where conventional systems say “computation is the transformation of information packets flowing through component graphs,” Substrates says “computation is the interpretation of signal flows through temporal orders.”

This reconceptualization changes what kinds of systems you can naturally build. Message-based systems excel at problems that map to explicit coordination between autonomous components: microservices communicating via requests and responses, stream processing pipelines transforming records into aggregates, and distributed workflows orchestrating multi-step processes. These are all problems where the discrete packet model provides useful structure and the spatial topology model makes relationships explicit.

Signal-flow systems excel at problems that require temporal reasoning and real-time adaptation: neural network implementations where signals propagate through interconnected processing units, control systems where feedback loops enable homeostatic regulation, and observability substrates where continuous signal streams feed into cascading interpretations. These are problems where deterministic ordering provides crucial guarantees and emergent topology enables adaptive structure.

The performance characteristics differ dramatically as well. Conventional systems pay costs for packet reification: memory allocation for message objects, serialization for network transmission, queue management for mailbox and buffer handling, synchronization for thread-safe handoffs. These costs are acceptable for systems processing thousands or millions of events per second, but they become prohibitive for systems needing billions of operations per second. Substrates’ emission model, with zero-allocation enum signals and in-memory-only flow, achieves approximately single-digit nanosecond latency per emission—roughly three hundred million operations per second per circuit. This enables using the substrate for fine-grained instrumentation that’d be impossible with conventional architectures.

But perhaps the deepest difference is philosophical rather than technical. Conventional data processing systems assume that computation is something we do to information. We receive information, we transform it, we route it somewhere else. The information is primary, computation is secondary. Substrates assumes that computation emerges from signal flows. Signals propagate through substrates, interpretations form through processing; meaning emerges from patterns. The signal is primary, the interpretation is constructed. This shift from processing to emergence, from acting on information to meaning-making from signals, creates space for systems that interpret themselves rather than being interpreted by external observers.

Part II: Rethinking Observability – From Measurement to Meaning-Making

The Telemetry Paradigm: Extracting Data for External Analysis

If data processing systems have converged on messages and packets as their conceptual foundation, observability systems have converged on an equally powerful metaphor: telemetry. Just as spacecraft send measurements back to ground control, applications send metrics, logs, and traces to observability backends where they’re analyzed, correlated, and visualized to understand system behavior.

OpenTelemetry, the current standard-bearer for observability, provides APIs for applications to generate three types of data artifacts. Metrics are quantitative measurements taken over time: counters that increment, gauges that sample values, histograms that track distributions. Logs are timestamped text records documenting events that occurred. Traces are hierarchical spans representing the execution of operations, with each span recording start time, end time, status, and attributes.

The conceptual model is fundamentally extractive and retrospective. Applications are instrumented with code that generates telemetry data, collectors gather that data and optionally transform it, exporters ship it to backends, and backends store it for querying and analysis. The meaning-making happens after the fact. Prometheus analyzes metrics with queries and alert rules to determine when error rates are elevated. Jaeger visualizes trace spans to identify slow operations in request chains. Grafana correlates multiple data sources to build dashboards that surface patterns and anomalies.

OpenTelemetry’s instrumentation API reflects this extractive model in its structure. To track request counts, you create a counter and add values to it with attributes providing context. The Counter API looks like this in concept:

This model allows applications to focus on generating data while specialized systems handle storage, analysis, and visualization. It enables post-hoc analysis where you can query historical data to understand what happened during incidents or trace causality through complex request chains. It allows for gradual evolution where you can change analysis strategies or add new visualizations without modifying application code.

This telemetry model scales remarkably well to large distributed systems, but at a significant cost. You can instrument thousands of services, collect billions of data points, query across distributed traces, and build comprehensive dashboards. But the model also has inherent limitations that stem from its extractive, retrospective nature.

First, the gap between measurement and meaning creates interpretation overhead. Applications record that things happened; backends determine what those happenings mean. This division requires maintaining parallel semantic systems: application code that generates measurements, configuration in backends that interpret those measurements, alert rules that define conditions, and dashboards that visualize patterns. When you want to understand if your system is healthy, you must query backends, evaluate rules, and examine dashboards. The system can’t tell you itself—you must ask external oracles.

Second, the after-the-fact analysis introduces latency between occurrence and understanding. Events happen in applications, telemetry flows to collectors, collectors export to backends, backends process and index data, queries run against indexed data, and alerts evaluate against query results. This pipeline might take seconds or minutes to produce insights. For many operational scenarios, this latency is acceptable, but for closed-loop control systems that need to react immediately to changing conditions, the delay is prohibitive.

Third, the quantitative measurement model discards semantic richness. When you increment a counter for a failed request, you record the fact that a number went up, but you lose the semantic distinction between different kinds of failures. Did the request timeout? Was it rejected due to rate limiting? Did it fail validation? These differences might be reconstructable from attributes, but they require downstream systems to know how to interpret string values and correlate patterns.

Serventis’ Alternative: Observability as First-Class Computation

Serventis begins from a fundamentally different premise: observability isn’t something you add to systems by extracting measurements, but something that emerges when systems interpret their own signals. Rather than generating telemetry data for external analysis, systems emit semantic signals that other parts of the system can subscribe to, transform, and interpret in real-time. The meaning-making happens internally, as computation, using the same substrate and circuits that drive the primary system behavior.

The foundational pattern in Serventis is expressed as Signal equals Sign x Dimension. Every observable event is composed of a Sign, which carries the primary semantic meaning, and a Dimension, which provides the interpretive frame. This pattern appears consistently across all Serventis instruments.

What happened here? The system emitted a semantic signal that describes in domain terms what occurred. When you call counter.overflow(), you aren’t recording a numeric value that later analysis might correlate with a boundary condition. You’re emitting a signal whose meaning is intrinsic: a boundary was violated. Any subscriber to this channel receives an OVERFLOW sign and can react to that specific semantic event.

This is the difference between quantitative measurement and qualitative description. OpenTelemetry records “the counter’s value is now 4,294,967,296” and downstream systems must know that this number means overflow occurred for a 32-bit counter. Serventis emits “OVERFLOW occurred” as a first-class semantic event that requires no numeric interpretation.

The Probes API demonstrates the dimensional aspect of the Signal equals Sign x Dimension pattern. Probes instrument communication operations and outcomes from dual perspectives:

The dimension—RELEASE versus RECEIPT—changes the interpretive frame for the same sign. Both sides of a connection can report what they’re doing and what they observe the other doing. This enables detecting coordination failures that are invisible in traditional tracing. If service A emits probe.connect() but service B never emits probe.connected(), coordination failed despite A believing it succeeded. The dual perspective makes explicit what distributed tracing only implicitly represents through span timing and status.

The Services API extends this pattern to cover the full lifecycle of work execution in service-oriented systems:

Each of these methods emits a semantic sign describing what happened in service coordination terms. These aren’t generic “something occurred” events—they’re domain-specific signals whose meaning is immediately clear. When a service emits a REJECT sign, every subscriber knows this was a policy or overload decision, not a technical failure. When a service emits SUSPEND followed later by RESUME, the work continuity is explicitly modeled.

The Assessment Hierarchy: From Sensing to Situation

What makes Serventis architecturally profound isn’t just that it uses semantic signals instead of quantitative metrics, but that it provides explicit support for the hierarchy of interpretation that transforms raw observations into actionable understanding. This hierarchy is absent from telemetry frameworks, which flatten everything to a single level of “data artifacts” and leave all interpretation to external backends.

Serventis models three distinct levels of observability:

The first level is raw observation—the signals emitted by instruments like Counters, Gauges, Probes, and Services. These signals describe what’s happening in immediate operational terms: requests are being made, connections are succeeding or failing, resources are being acquired and released, work is completing or failing.

The second level is condition assessment, provided by the Monitors API. Monitors observe patterns in raw signals and emit assessments of operational conditions:

Notice that the condition assessment itself is a signal with the same structural pattern: Sign times Dimension. The Sign is the operational state: STABLE, CONVERGING, DIVERGING, ERRATIC, DEGRADED, DEFECTIVE, DOWN. The Dimension is the confidence level: TENTATIVE, MEASURED, CONFIRMED. This separation enables graduated responses. A tentative degradation might trigger increased sampling and observation. A measured degradation might trigger alerts and preparation for remediation. A confirmed degradation might trigger automatic failover.

This is statistical epistemology built into the observability API. The system isn’t just reporting states but reporting its certainty about those states, enabling downstream decision-makers to act appropriately given the evidence available. This concept doesn’t exist in telemetry frameworks, where all data points are treated as equally authoritative regardless of the statistical basis for their values.

The third level is situational assessment, provided by the Reporters API. Reporters consume condition assessments and emit judgments of operational significance:

The Reporter translates objective conditions into actionable priorities. A degraded condition in a development environment might be a normal situation requiring no intervention, while the same condition in production during peak traffic might be a critical situation demanding immediate response. The Reporter embodies contextual judgment about significance.

This three-level hierarchy—raw observation, condition assessment, situational judgment—happens inside the system, in real-time, using the same circuits and flows that drive primary behavior. A subscriber can attach to a Reporter channel and receive critical situation signals within nanoseconds of the underlying observations that led to that assessment. The entire assessment pipeline executes as deterministic signal flow through configured flows and subscriber callbacks, with no external systems, no query languages, and no dashboards required for the system to understand itself.

Theoretical Foundations: Situation Awareness and Semiotic Interpretation

This three-level observability hierarchy in Serventis closely parallels established models from cognitive science and semiotics, providing theoretical validation for its architectural approach. Specifically, Endsley’s widely cited Situation Awareness model describes human comprehension through three levels: Level 1 Perception (detecting elements in the environment), Level 2 Comprehension (understanding their meaning and significance), and Level 3 Projection (forecasting future states and implications). Serventis implements a computational analog of this cognitive model: raw instrument signals provide perception, Monitor condition assessments provide comprehension, and Reporter situational evaluations provide the projection necessary for deciding what actions to take.

This alignment with Endsley’s model isn’t merely metaphorical but architectural. Just as human operators build situation awareness by progressing from sensing raw data to comprehending its meaning to projecting implications, Serventis systems build operational understanding by progressing from instrument signals through condition assessment to situational judgment. The hierarchy enables graduated responses based on assessment confidence and situational severity, much as human operators adjust their response urgency based on their confidence in their situation awareness and the severity of the assessed situation.

Similarly, the Signal equals Sign multiplied by Dimension pattern draws conceptual support from Peirce’s semiotic triad, which describes meaning-making through the relationship between Signs (representations), Objects (what is represented), and Interpretants (the meaning that emerges from interpretation). In Serventis, the Sign carries the semantic classification of what occurred, the Dimension provides the interpretive frame or perspective, and the combination produces meaningful signals that subscribers interpret within their operational context. The system is performing semiosis—the process of meaning-making—as a computational operation rather than as a purely cognitive one.

This theoretical grounding matters because it demonstrates that Serventis isn’t arbitrarily inventing novel abstractions but rather implementing well-validated models of how understanding emerges from observation. The architecture can leverage decades of research on what makes situation awareness effective, what causes it to fail, and how to design systems that support it. For instance, research on situation awareness failures often identifies mode confusion, inadequate comprehension of system state, or failure to project future states—all failure modes that Serventis’ explicit hierarchy is designed to address by making each level of assessment explicit and observable.

Closed-Loop Adaptation and Self-Interpretation

The implications of this internal assessment model are profound. Because observability happens as computation rather than data extraction, systems can form closed-loop adaptive circuits. A Service can subscribe to a Reporter that assesses the Service’s own health and use those situation signals to modify its behavior.

This pattern creates a feedback loop where the system’s assessment of its own condition influences its own behavior, which in turn produces new observations that feed back into the assessment. This is homeostatic regulation implemented as signal flow, with deterministic causality ensured by the Circuit’s sequential processing.

Such patterns are extremely challenging to implement with telemetry-based observability. The latency between observation and interpretation means that by the time an alert fires, conditions may have changed. The indirection through backends means that application code can’t directly observe assessment outputs. The separation between measurement and action requires complex integration between alerting systems and control planes. What Serventis makes natural and deterministic is awkward and fragile in telemetry architectures.

Epistemic Safety: Guarding Against Automated Apophenia

While closed-loop adaptation offers powerful capabilities, it also introduces risks that warrant explicit architectural attention. When systems automatically assess conditions and adapt behavior based on those assessments at computational speeds, they can potentially develop what might be called “computational superstition”—the reliable production and reinforcement of spurious correlations that lead to maladaptive behavior.

This risk, sometimes termed apophenia in the context of pattern recognition, emerges whenever automated systems identify patterns without mechanisms for validating causal relationships or disconfirming spurious correlations. A monitoring system might observe that increased error rates correlate with certain operational patterns and adapt behavior accordingly, even if the correlation is coincidental rather than causal. The determinism that makes Substrates valuable for debugging also means that incorrect assessment logic will reliably produce incorrect adaptations, potentially creating positive feedback loops that amplify problems rather than resolving them.

Serventis provides several architectural features that help mitigate these risks, though deploying self-interpreting systems requires thoughtful design around epistemic safety. The confidence dimension in Monitor assessments (TENTATIVE, MEASURED, CONFIRMED) enables graduated responses where tentative assessments trigger increased observation and data collection rather than immediate adaptation, allowing time for patterns to stabilize before acting on them. The explicit separation between condition assessment (Monitors) and situational evaluation (Reporters) creates an architectural boundary where human judgment about significance can be injected, preventing purely automated decisions about critical situations.

Additionally, the transparency of the signal-flow architecture means that assessment logic is itself observable. Meta-monitors can subscribe to Monitor and Reporter channels to track assessment patterns, detecting when confidence levels are unstable, when situation evaluations are oscillating, or when adaptation responses are creating cycles rather than convergence. The Actors API provides mechanisms for human operators to inject speech acts that override automated assessments or provide corrective guidance when computational interpretations diverge from operational reality.

However, these architectural affordances aren’t automatic safeguards—they’re capabilities that system designers must deliberately employ. Production deployments of self-interpreting systems require careful attention to validation mechanisms, disconfirmation strategies, and human oversight for critical decisions.
