The master said,
Tell me first what you wish to know.
The apprentice said,
I wish to know what my systems are doing.
The master said,
A system does a great deal in every moment.
It moves values.
It crosses boundaries.
It opens and closes its work
ten thousand times
between two breaths.
Choose the doing you will keep.
The apprentice said,
I will keep all of it.
Then I will hold the whole.
The master said,
Sit a while, and consider the one who receives all of it.
The apprentice sat.

The master said,
A record of all the doing arrives at a desk.
A person sits at the desk and reads.
The person holds ten thousand doings and
asks of each one, does this matter.
The person asks it ten thousand times,
at the hour the system is already in trouble,
with the trouble growing while the asking runs.
Consider that person.
The apprentice said,
That person suffers.
The master said,
That person is every person who comes after you.
That person is you at the far end of the night.
The question you set aside arrives at their desk,
multiplied by all the doing you chose to keep.

The apprentice was quiet. Then he said,
Where does the asking belong.
The master said,
The asking belongs here, with you, now,
before the system emits a single thing.
You sit closest to the system.
You know, at the moment a thing happens,
what it means here.
You know what expectation was met or broken.
You know what boundary was crossed.
You know what state changed.
You know whether this was ordinary work,
strained work, failed work, recovered work,
or work that should not have happened at all.
You mark its significance before it leaves.
The mark travels with it.
Every reader above you receives a thing
that already carries its first meaning.
The asking has already begun
before it reaches their hands.
The apprentice said,
The asking is hard.

The master said,
The asking is hard once, here, for you.
The asking carried downstream
is hard ten thousand times,
for everyone, forever.
You hold the hard thing once
and you spare the many.
This is the whole of the labor,
and the labor is a gift
to those who come after.
The apprentice said,
Then my first task is a question.
The master said,
Your first task is the question.
What is significant here.
What state is worth marking.
What does this happening mean
to the one who will read it.
You answer the question in the smallest thing,
at the place it happens, before it leaves.
The system carries your answer
upward through every layer,
and each layer receives meaning
that was first marked below it.

The apprentice said,
And if I begin with the instrumentation,
and place the meaning later.
The master said,
Consider the two ends of the same night.
A builder who marks meaning at the source
sends meaning upward, and the reader reads.
A builder who sends only the doing
sends the recovery with it,
and the reader descends
into ten thousand doings
to find the one meaning,
at the hour meaning is hardest to find.
The reach of the whole system
is set at the place
the first question is asked.
The apprentice rose and took up the smallest part of his system,
the single thing at the point where it happens.
He felt the work move to the beginning.
Ask what it means before it leaves you.
The climb is decided there.
